Columbus Sigma Chi Alumni and Significant Others are invited to volunteer for Hockey Fest.

What: Help Blue Jackets Players and Wives make this event a success!!

Each season, the Columbus Blue Jackets Foundation teams up with the Jackets players, wives, coaches, and broadcasters to host the HOCKEY FEST and AUCTION - a day long extravaganza throughout Nationwide Arena of games, autograph sessions, locker room tours, interactive photo stations, auction, and more to benefit the Foundation’s mission.

Sigma Chi will be working 2 gaming card booths at the event. WE HAVE 40 SLOTS TO FILL.

The Legacy Continues

The Central Ohio Alumni Association held its 4^th Annual Golf Outing but it’s inaugural “Sigs for Kids” Classic at Tartan East Golf Course on Sunday, June 8, 2008. Over the past couple of months, Mike DeAngelis (Delta Kappa '94) was a driving force behind this project. This event was the largest gathering of Sigma Chis in the metro area where approximately 1,400 Sigs reside. 8 Chapters were represented at this outing. Most importantly, this event raised just shy of $4,000.00 to the health and happiness of local Nationwide Children’s Hospital and The Columbus Blue Jackets Foundation!

Brothers drove all the way from Cleveland to attend this event and support a great cause. We had many winners in a variety of golf categories, the team of Davis, Heicher, Scharver, and Van Nostran took home the 1^st place prize while a group of Delta Kappa Sigs which will remain nameless each walked away with ball retrievers for their efforts!

As the largest gathering of Sigma Chi Alumni in the Central Ohio area this year, this event provided not only a great alumni gathering, but also funding for area Children’s Hospital projects in the name of Ethan Scharver and Elizabeth Szasz. Plan to join us next year, get out for a day and join us on the course for golf, a drink (or three), and some great brotherly fun and laughter.

Not a golfer? Join us next year for cocktails, good, spirit (and spirits), silent auction, and fun. Just being around the brothers makes for an enjoyable evening.

Earth Day 2008

Earth Day was held on April 26th, 2008 at Goodale Park in the Short North. A number of COS brothers were in attendance showing their support. Brothers, Dan Sharpe (Gamma 06), Nate Fisher (AG 93), Matt Carter & Tom Flynn(AG 96), as well as Josh Corna (OU 95) of Corna*Kokosing was there on a business mission in support of his company and their green building initiatives.

RUSSELL Richard W. Russell, age 75, passed away on Saturday, April 26, 2008 at The Ohio State Medical Center. Dick graduated from OSU with a BS in Education (1955) and later received his MS in Education (1967). He was a veteran of the United States Army, Third Armored Division, Ft. Knox. Coach Russell's teaching and coaching career spanned many years. At Upper Arlington Schools, he was a teacher and swimming coach from 1957 to 1964. He then moved on to Kenyon College, where he was the swimming, golf and football coach from 1964 to 1968. At Bucknell University he was an Associate Professor. He was the men's head swimming coach from 1968 to 1994 and he established the Bucknell water polo program and was instrumental in developing the sport througout the Eastern United States and founded the Collegiate Water Polo Association in 1970. This association originally only included a few teams and now as a result of his pioneering work in establishing this league, he laid the foundation for a nationwide conference that includes over 230 teams. Coach Russell won numerious conference championships in both swimming and water polo and competed in the NCAA's many years. As a result of his consistent success, he was the first Bucknell coach to record more that 100 victories in two sports. Upon his retirement, he was elected into the Bucknell Hall of Fame as well as the Collegiate Water Polo Hall of Fame. He enjoyed golf, fishing, reading and watching the Buckeyes. He was a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity at The Ohio State University. Mr. Russell's greatest love was his teaching and coaching career as well as his family. He adored spending time with his grandchildren and will be missed by all who knew him. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Mary Lou; his son, David (Jane) Russell, Danville, PA; his daughter, Jennifer (Ron) Lachey, New Albany, OH; grandchildren, Zach Russell; Mia, Ava and Blake Lachey; brother, John E. (Jodie) Russell, sister-in-law, JoAnn Wayson; niece and nephews, Lisa Frantz, Kevin Russell, Scott Russell and their families. Preceded in death by his parents Wilbur and Evelyn Russell, brother William Russell. Family will receive friends 6–8 p.m. Wednesday and 11 a.m.–1 p.m., Thursday at SCHOEDINGER NORTHEAST CHAPEL, 1051 E. Johnstown Rd., Gahanna, where the Funeral Service will be held 1 p.m., Thursday, May 1, 2008. Interment Union Cemetery. State of the Alumni Chapter- A new direction and purpose

As we build on momentum from 1^st Quarter 2008, I would like to share with you some of our accomplishments from the beginning of January until now and also share with you a new direction that the Central Ohio Alumni Chapter of Sigma Chi is headed in the future.

Some of our accomplishments this quarter include:

Exceeded total 2007 membership by March 28^th, 2008
34 Brothers attended the 1^st Quarter lunch, despite the Blizzard
Strong First Thursday attendance month after month

As our chapter continues to evolve we will make changes and reevaluate our goals and objectives on an ongoing basis much like any organization. In my first “State of the Alumni Chapter” message I provided the three key points to the chapter and once again they are outlined below:

We want to provide an opportunity to:

Maintain friendships, rekindle old ones and build new ones

Establish a means of networking for professional opportunities

Express the values of Sigma Chi through philanthropic activities

As alumni, our focus often moves from going out with friends or attending social events to focusing on careers and family. It is also important that we look to assist and enhance the lives of Brothers and their Families throughout life’s challenges. I want to share with you two stories of Central Ohio Sig Alums.

Ethan Scharver is the son of John Scharver, a Kent State Alum. Ethan was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) in January 2006 at the age of 3. ALL is a cancer of the blood. Ethan’s protocol consist of daily oral chemotherapy, routine visits to Nationwide Children’s Hospital for blood tests, IV chemotherapy and a spinal tap every 12 weeks. He misses out on normal everyday activities of a now 5 year old boy because of his weakened immune system and ongoing treatment. He will be undergoing treatment until May 2009.

Elizabeth Szasz is the daughter of Steve Szasz, an OSU Alum. Elizabeth was diagnosed with a form of Epilepsy known as Partial Complex Seizures in 2005. Elizabeth is now 3 years old and continues to battle this disease day to day. Elizabeth has been in the hospitals numerous times since she was diagnosed. She is currently taking 3 medicines daily, the medicines still are not working. She recently was seen at the Cleveland Clinic and will continue to work with them in hopes of finding the right medicine to suppress her seizures.

As I sat with each Brother and listened to them explain how courageous their children were for their attitudes and battles, I could not help to think how these two Brothers represent the ideals of the White Cross of Sigma Chi in their daily lives. Being the father of an 8 year old daughter and 5 year old son, I could not imagine going through what these families endure on a daily basis, when I sometimes complain about juggling gymnastics, soccer, karate, and other activities that fill our calendars.

These are just two cases of childhood diseases, however, these hit close to home. After brief discussions with the Steering Club and several other Alums, it was decided that we should refocus our direction and purpose as an Alumni Organization. Childhood disease touches everyone no matter if it is your child, niece, nephew, or grandchild.

That being said, our golf outing “Sigs for Kids” is the first step in helping to raise money for Nationwide Children’s Hospital in the name of Ethan Scharver and Elizabeth Szasz. This event, on Sunday June 8^th at Tartan East, will go to support the battle against Childhood Diseases. This is an ideal way to help not only our community but to help our own. As we all know family comes first, especially the families of our Sigma Chi Brothers.

The Central Ohio Sigma Chi Alumni Chapter is proud to present your chapter members with the opportunity to earn a $500 scholarship. The purpose of this scholarship is to recognize one of our undergraduate brothers for making himself a credit to the Sigma Chi Fraternity through significant contributions and service to his respective chapter.

You may download the nomination form at www.centralohiosigs.com by clicking on the “scholarship” option on the left side-bar. Your chapter may nominate as many members as deemed worthy. Please submit all completed nominations forms via email to ewemery@gmail.com by May 15, 2008. We will make our decision by August 1, 2008 and present the winner at our 1^st Thursday Happy Hour this fall. We would like to have the winner as our guest at the golf outing but it will not be a requirement to receive his award.

DRESS CODE:
Proper golf attire includes a collared shirt with sleeves or turtleneck. Shirttails must be tucked into trousers. Denim and sweatpants, regardless of color or style, are not permitted. Shorts of a suitable length of 16 inches are permissible. Ladies may wear a golf shirt with shorts, skirts or slacks. No T-shirts or bathing attire will be permitted. Non-metallic spikes, tennis shoes, or soft-soled footwear are mandatory. (No metal spikes whatsoever will be permitted.) Spike changing services are available at The Club for a nominal fee. On January 23, 2006 our son, Ethan, was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. It goes without saying that our lives have changed dramatically. The last couple of months have been challenging, but Ethan continues to show us his inner strength and tough attitude. Please join us on Ethan’s Journey as we fight the battle against pediatric cancer.

State of the Alumni Chapter- What is in it for you?

2007 was a year of continued progress for the Central Ohio Sigma Chi Alumni Chapter. By the end of the year we had accomplished many of our goals, and have set new ones for this coming year. Your commitment and involvement continue to pay dividends. Last year, our membership increased by 300%, we achieved a steady rate of attendees to our monthly happy hour and continued with our quarterly luncheon featuring prominent Sigs. And, we have a Steering Committee that is dedicated and effective in maintaining momentum.

This coming year provides us with more opportunities and challenges. We have over 1,400 alumni in the Columbus area from which we can all benefit tremendously, and we plan on reaching out to as many as possible. Our mission is simple, and remains the same. We want to provide an opportunity to:

While we did realize some gains last year, we do have our set of challenges ahead. We have only a fraction of the 1,400 Sigs in the area signed up as paying members. If we mobilize just 10% of that into one organized effort, we can make more of an impact on the initiatives we've identified. With 25% of the local Sigs as paying members of one organization, we can move mountains. We need your commitment to sign up or renew your membership, and your help in getting others to join. We need all the local Sigs working together to have the desired impact.

March 7th Luncheon at Athletic Club-a snowy success!

About 40 brothers braved the start of Columbus' Blizzard of 2008 and made it out to the Luncheon. Thank you for coming! We hope that you enjoyed yourself, and that we will see you again soon.

SPEAKER: Mike Ward- Alpha Gamma 91
TOPIC- Mike's experience serving in Persian Gulf, Iraq and the Reserve, flying in over 500+ missions during his career.
Mike Ward, Alpha Gamma 91, started his active duty career in the Marine Corps flying AH-1W Super Cobra helicopters with Marine Attack Helicopter 169 in Camp Pendleton, California in 1991. While there he was involved in 2 deployments in the Persian Gulf region. In 2000, he left active duty to attend the Fisher College of Business at Ohio State University where he received his Masters in Business Administration. Following graduation, he began his present civilian career with American Electric Power. In 2002, he joined Reserve Marine Attack Helicopter Squadron 775 in Johnstown, PA. He was subsequently called back to Active Duty for a period of 2-years and was involved in 2 six-month deployments to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. He flew 600+ flight hours on 500 combat missions over Iraq, and was awarded 13 Strike/Flight Air Medals for his service. He is currently a Lieutenant Colonel in the Reserves and instructs Primary Navy/Marine Corps Flight Training in Pensacola for his monthly Reserve service. He is also the 2007 recipient of the Military Service Award, given by Sigma Chi.
NEXT Luncheon will be scheduled for June, date forthcoming.
